'My dressage horse Flash used to have a regular discharge from his nose and was diagnosed as being allergic to many grass and tree pollens. I made sure Flash was on dust free bedding, improved his ventilation and I would do regular cobweb sweeps. “I was first introduced to HAYGAIN when we acquired a unit in our equine hospital (Hagyard) for cases that have been diagnosed with respiratory issues. We have used it for foals with severe Rhodococcus equi pneumonia to aid in reducing the amount of inhaled allergens when they eat hay. "During the 2010 World Equestrian Games (WEG) at the Kentucky Horse Park, I was fortunate to have been one of the internal medicine veterinarians responsible for the care of these world-class athletes. At the WEG, we had a HAYGAIN unit (HG-1000) provided to our team of veterinarians working at the on-site hospital. During the WEG, it was not uncommon to have several horses that shipped overseas diagnosed with mild pneumonia. We used the HAYGAIN steamed hay to decrease the amount of inhaled allergens which would have resulted in more inflammation within the lungs. We also used HAYGAIN steamed hay for a couple of horses that had conjunctivitis (irritation of the conjunctiva resulting in red irritated eyes that were tearing excessively). It was especially important to use the steamed hay at the WEG in particular because those horses were not allowed to be on any medications during the competition. HAYGAIN was a great asset to have as an adjunctive therapy for several of the medical conditions encountered during the 2010 World Equestrian Games.”

"Let me tell you the success story of my HAYGAIN hay steamer...

2 years ago in June my horse Immer Schon (German Trakehner, 24 years old) was quite unexpectedly diagnosed with COPD. The whole summer he was on and off steroids and practically not fit to be ridden due to the cough and breathing difficulties. At the end of summer he was put on ‘Ventipulmin’ (equine bronchodilator). Fall went OK, but in winter his problems worsened. The only option became to put him on steroids permanently, which I was strongly against given all possible side effects. One day while I was searching the web for COPD stuff I ran across hay steamers. I became interested but had tons of questions, since this was new stuff and no one I knew ever heard of them. I called HAYGAIN and Clint Joiner helped me tremendously answering all my questions and explaining. So I bought a hay steamer (1/2 bale model). Honestly I can’t say that I believed in it much (too good to be true?), but what did I have to lose? I was impressed how quickly it arrived, how well it was packaged, not even mentioning how well everything was thought through: water bottle, funnel, dip stick. I was also pleased how beautiful it looked.

Unfortunately due to some serious family problems I didn’t get it out to the barn until end of October (6 months after I bought it), so we have been using it for only 7 months and here are the results. At first my horse was the only one at the barn getting steamed hay. His respiratory condition improved very fast. Our office manager was more than skeptical about my hay steamer. She allowed me to install it; however she kept making fun of me.

Her opinion changed 100% once she finally decided to try putting one of her COPD horses (also on ‘Ventipulmin’) on steamed hay. This horse stopped coughing the very same day (he used to cough badly every time he was given his hay)! He has been completely off ‘Ventipulmin’ for a while now. Currently I am taking my horse off ‘Ventipulmin’ and he seems to be doing just fine. Yesterday we put 2 more horses on steamed hay. Needless to say our barn manager is now a great believer and is no longer making fun of me. As for me I am now the greatest fan of HAYGAIN (both the product and a customer service) and advertise it to other people every chance I get.

“I just wanted to drop you all a line and a bit of an update on our HAYGAIN steamer. We have been using it for about nine months now and are very pleased with the results it gives us. Living in the humid climate of southern Indiana we often struggle getting hay that is free of mold. The steamer gives us the assurance that we're feeding the healthiest possible hay we can. Since our oldest horse suffers from allergies, this has been a Godsend for him. No more runny noses! We run about two and a half bales through the steamer every day to feed our three Clydes and one Halflinger. They have all eaten the steamed hay from the get go with no problems.

We had some problems with the elements going bad but in the end now realize it was our doing. All the people at the Tennessee office have been great to deal with and more than patient. The problems we were experiencing were remedied when I installed a charcoal whole house filter in the water line that we use to fill the boilers. We have an extremely high lime content in our water. Jiffy has replaced two of these elements at no charge and included shipping. Once we installed the filter our fill sticks are no longer milky white and I'm confident we will have no more problems. Thanks guys! Also, I installed two timer switches on the circuits the unit is plugged into. They have a max time of one hour so we never have to worry about the unit running low on water. If we want a bit more heat we just pop in and crank an extra fifteen or thirty minutes on them.

While attending the Kentucky Rolex this year I was fortunate that my friend noticed a booth in the trade building for HayGain Hay Steamers. She new that my pony has heaves so she brought my attention to the HayGain steamers. We met Alan and Clint who were both so personable. I felt like we were friends the moment we started to talk. Alan was explaining to me about how the Haygain Steamer eliminates the need to soak hay for my pony. He was telling me about the riders that HayGain sponsors and all the big barns that use HayGain. I didn't really care about all that because I just have two horses. My pony Nutmeg and my horse Snickers. I started to tell Alan about my Nutmeg who has heaves and I started to cry! What poor Alan didn't know is while he was thinking about the Haysteamer and telling me about how it kills the spores in the hay and totally eliminates the dust, I couldn't help but wonder if this couldn't help Nutmeg and I started going down Memory lane.

This pony had taken my daughter from barrel racer and Little Britches Rodeo in grade-school and has grown up with her. They grew up together. The past few years Nutmeg has been coughing..this last winter was the worst. I brought her to the vet and they gave her steroids and antibiotics to clear out her lungs. While I was gone to the Rolex, my husband who was suppose to be soaking her hay while I was gone and wasn't reported that she was coughing more than ever.

It didn't take much to convince him that we really needed this haysteamer. I ordered on that day in April and have been really happy with the results so far. I love not having to soak hay! I can only imagine what that would be like in the winter. My hay is dust free, smells great and is more palatable for the horses to eat. The horses prefer the steamed hay to any dry hay.

Not only will the HayGain help Nutmeg the pony, but it will also help Snickers so that she will never develop heaves and have to go through what Nutmeg did. My daughter has done a lot of jumping with Snickers and I do natural horsemanship with her.

What I really appreciated about Clint and Alan were that it didn't matter to them that I didn't have the high priced horses and are top competitors. They knew that my horses mean the world to me, and they treated me just like they do their top customers.

I will recommend this HayGain steamer to all my horse friends because I now the value in it.

"I am so pleased with Asti, it is lovely to see her tucking into a hay net and pulling great mouthfuls out rather than her picking at it.  She has always been so difficult to feed, what she liked one day she wouldn’t touch the next, it was the same with both hard feed and hay or haylage, so a real challenge to keep weight on her. When the Haygain arrived she was weighing in at 460Kg which isn’t much for a 16.1hh TB, but already after just a few months she has come back up to 480Kg and looks fabulous. 
I hate to admit I am already looking forward to next winter to see if I can actually keep her eating all winter with her steamed hay. She has been a real challenge and at worst comes out of winter at 420Kg with gastric ulcers and looking terrible.  The other positive note I have especially with this horse is with her eating more fibre my hard feed bill has finally gone down. When she was picking at hay or haylage I had to offer her more hard feeds, not ideal for her nor my pocket, so it is nice that now she can have her steamed hay adlib when in and down to 3 small hard feeds a day for nutrients.
I think I calculated that now Asti is not having to have a range of different haylage and sacks of various feeds I can cover the cost of the Haygain with her alone in 4 to 5 months, and of course if she does not have to have Gastrogard it will be even quicker to cover!
Anyway, excellent and thank you for extending the trial while I made the decision, I just had to know she was going to eat the steamed hay for more than a few days, although I do have one whinge, I now have a horse that dribbles at the sight of a haynet!"

"In February 2011 my mare was diagnosed with COPD, which the vet described as being chronic.  He asked me if I would be interested in trialling a Haygain steamer as he felt the cause of the COPD was due to a dust allergy from the hay and he felt a Haygain steamer would help. 

Two days after seeing the vet I had a Haygain Steamer on my yard.  The steamer was very simple to use and quickly became part of my daily routine.  The smell of the steamed hay on a cold winter morning caught the attention of the horses on our yard and my mare loved the taste of the steamed hay.

See below calculation from Mr Sean Rush on his annual savings while using HAYGAIN versus a high quality bagged hay product. The following numbers are based on one horse. 

• Our horses are large warmbloods anywhere from 16.3 to 18.3 hands.
• We were feeding one bag (30#) of bagged hay at $11.50 a bag/day.
• $11.50 x 365 days per year = $4,197.50 per horse / per year for bagged hay.
• The hay we feed is $7.25 for a 60# bale.  Our horses eat about half a bale a day - (30# bagged hay replaced with 30# hay per day).
• $3.63 x 365 days per year = $1,324.95 per horse / per year for hay.

Summary of Savings:
• Bagged hay per year / per horse $4,197.50.
• Hay per year/ per horse at $1,324.95.
• Equals a savings per year/ per horse of $2,872.55.  Therefore paying for a full bale HAYGAIN unit in less than one year’s time.
• The reality is we had three horses on the bagged hay at a total of $12,592.50 versus three horses on hay at $3,974.85 for a savings this year of $8,617.65.

Medication Reduction:
• Ventipulmin is $268.99 for a 460 ml bottle. ($0.58 per ml).
• The mare was on 12 cc (1cc=1ml) per day equating to $6.96 per day or $2,540.40 per year.
• We have reduced the mare to 6 cc per day equating to $3.48 per day or $1,270.20 per year.
• For an annual medication savings of $1,270.20 and we are hoping to reduce further, if not take her off it completely.

Thank you for the prompt delivery of the HG-600 Haygain steamer we ordered the week before Christmas. We received it Christmas Eve
in what was a difficult time for deliveries due to the adverse weather. We ordered the unit after Danni came to the yard with a demo unit
and we were able to sample the benefits of the Haygain system.The demo was very well conducted and explained and all our questions were answered and we were able to sample the hay after steaming.

Our horse is a 22 year old Arab who has been on soaked hay due to Bronchiolitis, on our vets reccomendation. We wanted to make sure he would eat the steamed hay before we ordered a unit. After an initial sniff he was soon munching away happily. He has also suffered from Equine Metabolic Disease which caused a bad bout of laminitis this time last year. He only gets a small amount of grass so mainly eats hay along with a careful diet. Due to the cold weather before Christmas he suffered a bout of colic which we think was caused by the soaked hay despite soaking in hot water was freezing so that was the reason to purchase a Haygain steamer. We did not soak his hay after the colic which then gave him a cough and he also needed his inhaler. After less than a week on the steamed hay the cough has gone and also we do not need the inhaler which are an expensive item.The horse even leaves his hard feed to eat the hay which he likes hot straight out of the steamer. As soon as the smell of the steamed hay reaches the stable he is soon looking out of the door waiting for his Haybar to be filled.Another benefit of the steamed hay is that he does not mind being stabled in bad weather as he cannot go out on frozen grass due to the laminitis.In good weather he goes in a stavation paddock with his hay. He hoovers up every bit and does not leave any in the stable either so cutting down on waste.We can give him measured amounts weighed out to keep his weight at the correct level.

The Haygain is filled with parcels of hay tied up in measured amounts or in nets with both methods being successful. Also we have noticed the horses droppings are much softer on the steamed hay. We have soon managed to organise the hay steaming in our routine at the yard and we only have to use the machine once a day to provide enough hay for 24 hours.

We are very happy with the Haygain and we hope this helps any other would be purchaser whose horse has suffered  problems as our own.

"I’ve been lucky enough to be supported by Haygain since the American Eventing Championships this year and it’s been a wonderful piece of machinery that has not only made my horses look and feel better, it’s saved me a fair bit of money in hay.

To start with I’ve noticed in the last month or two that the horses’ weight and condition have been better and better; I think this is due to a number of reasons but a contributing factor is the steamed hay has all the nutrients and minerals enhanced and preserved thanks to Haygain. “In May of 2010, my 10 year old quarter horse gelding, Handy, suffered a terrible respiratory infection when the mold count in our area went to record highs.  He was diagnosed with COPD.  He was already being housed outside and attempts were made to keep him dust-free as possible, but he was still having regular difficulty with his breathing.  I thought I might lose him. My vet recommended wetting his hay, but that didn't seem to help.  I began doing research on causes and cures for COPD and learned that a major irritant can be mold and contaminants in hay, even when dampened, soaked, or scattered.  I read about steaming hay and began looking at steamers.  It was then that I came across the HAYGAIN website.  After looking at several hay steamers, I settled on the HAYGAIN half bale steamer because of its size and design.  I ordered one and it arrived within a few days.  It was easy to set up, and I began to use it immediately.  Because I board my horse and someone else feeds, I set it on a timer to have steamed hay ready for feeding time.  I am happy to report that since using the HAYGAIN steamer, my horse has had very few episodes and the episodes he has had I believe were from other airborne molds rather than his hay.  Keeping COPD under control is not as simple as keeping his hay steamed and does require some medicine and supplements, but it certainly has reduced the episodes significantly.  One time he was given some "dry" hay by accident and by that evening his nose was running and he had a cough.  He went right back onto the steamed hay and the symptoms subsided by morning.  The HAYGAIN steamer is a major factor in helping to keep Handy healthy and able to move on down the trail!”

To reduce wastage and improve bedding efficiency and cost, To counteract problems with anticipated hay shortages and increased prices this year, it allows us to feed lesser quality hay if needed, it’s a better option than soaking, less hassle and much cleaner and because my horses are spoilt!
 
We chose Haygain because:
Customer service, it’s a robust product, easier handling, front opening, it can take a whole stringed bale so less messing about. It is the most efficient steaming system and you answered the phone! Giving me confidence that any future calls would be handled expediently and efficiently.
 
I use a timer, at the moment it goes on around 4.30am so breakfast is fresh steamed hay, but as weather deteriorates this may have to change to account for overnight freezing.
The horses LOVE it, if they are in the field when it is done; they come straight to the gate to come in to get it!  They respond to the hay like they respond to food.
They eat every last blade and there is none mashed up in the bedding, I haven’t noted any particular changes in the horses at present, but they aren’t exactly working hard!

There are some people who HATE it:
-  My chiropractor, I am a much less profitable customer as there is significantly less strain on my back, both through less lifting of hay, and less stress mucking out as the bed doesn’t get so ruined
-  My bedding provider, I use less
-  My hay provider, I use less
-  My supplement provider, no Respiratory supplements or cough medicine
-  My landlady, the horses kick the doors for it, like its proper feed time!

I have been using HAYGAIN since December 2009. I currently feed 13 horses on steamed hay, using one HAYGAIN.  It is reliable and simple to use, and operated by my grooms.
There was a notable difference in the condition of coats of all my horses, within a short period of time.  Also a noticeable gaining of condition of all the horses since been fed on steamed hay – especially with my 1.50m Showjumper, Paganini.  He was always a bit scrawny, but now carries condition easily, without any other changes in his diet and routine.
In January 2010 a horse arrived with very bad travel sickness after a 28 hour trip – she had a temperature and bad cough – we were really worried about her recovery.  We put her on steamed hay immediately, and she had the most remarkable recovery – within 7 days all sign of the cough had disappeared completely.

"My wife's horse has had persistently high GGT (gamma-glutamyl transferase) reading during routine blood tests for the last three years. Elevated GGT levels are most commonly seen from the ingestion of ragwort however it can be elevated with other agents toxic to the liver. Included in these are fungal toxins (mycotoxins in particular aflatoxins).  The grazing has no ragwort and the hay is made on site and is also free of ragwort. The hay is of variable quality with varying degrees of mould present.  In the six months of using the HAYGAIN steamer the horse's GGT levels have returned to normal.  Mycotoxins are known to be denatured by heat and as the feeding regime is little changed I feel the most likely cause for the lowering of the GGT levels is likely to be due to the neutralisation of the mycotoxins during the steaming process.  This is an observation on one individual, further trials would be required to establish proof." “I purchased a HAYGAIN steamer after doing a lot of research and comparisons between different steamers.  It was part of a water saving scheme at the Livery Yard I run which has forty horses.
There was a large number of people soaking hay and apart from seeing a lot of water used, it always made a mess and caused the drains to block when the water was thrown away after only one use. 
I chose the Haygain as it steams from the inside of the bale. It takes a whole bale or several full haynets at a time. The first steaming takes about 50 minutes, thereafter the time to steam takes about 35mins. 
The HAYGAIN has really proved its worth this winter, especially with the frozen, snowy conditions.  The clients are really pleased as they have not had to deal with cold water, (I think the haynets would have frozen this year!!!) I found clients warming their hands during the worst of the cold, as it is perfectly safe to touch the outside when it is in use!!!  The horses love it, the steamed hay is extremely palatable, dust free, therefore much healthier for them, it smells great and it saves lifting heavy haynets.  The cost in electricity is outweighed by the savings in water which is considerable.  The yard looks cleaner, the drains don’t get blocked and we have no problem with used water turning to ice on the concrete which happened when soaking hay.
